There’s NO Sub… for a GREAT Sub. And We Have Em’ At Cattleman’s

Aug 15, 2025

On the Mt. Rushmore of sandwiches, the submarine sandwich, would have to be right up there with the PB & J, the Grilled Cheese and any one of a number of American regional favorites, including the Cuban, the Philly Steak, the Lobster Roll, or the Po-Boy.

But the submarine sandwich, is in a class all its own.

Food historians trace back the Submarine Sandwich’s origins to somewhere around the late 1800’s along the Northeastern U.S. corridor, (stretching from Boston to as far south as Delaware) where Italian immigrants began making these sandwiches, crafted from a split, elongated Italian roll.

Due to its shape, it’s obvious where the name Submarine Sandwich originated from, but exactly who first came up with the name and in what region, is up for debate.

The candidates include an Italian immigrant, Dominic Conti (1874–1954) who in 1901, saw a recovered submarine vessel and named the elongated bun he was making from a recipe he brought from Italy, a submarine roll.

Another possibility were the sandwiches made in a long roll in the New London, Connecticut area (the site of a U.S. Naval Submarine Base) where locals coined it, a submarine sandwich about that same time.

Regardless, it wasn’t long before other names for this style of sandwich began to evolve in different regions of our country, including the Hoagie, the Hero, the Grinder, Italian, Wedge, Spukie, Blimpie or Zeppelin.

Here at Cattleman’s, we lovingly call ours by its most common, and most well-known name.

The Sub.
